LENB - Legal Environment of Business

A study of the legal and regulatory environment of business that focuses on ethical, global, political, economic, social, environmental, technological, and diversity issues.

A study of jurisprudence and the judicial system. Topical areas include: contracts, sales, commercial paper, secured transactions, agency, partnerships, corporations, bankruptcy, and real property.

Prerequisites: Acceptance into a Georgia College & State University exchange program and permission of the Director of International Services and Programs. An individually designed and planned learning experience in the student�s major program of study at an institution abroad. Specific credits to be determined in advance of registration and study. Grading to be based on evaluation reports of the exchange institution. The course may be used to fulfill major requirements limited only by the program specific requirements of a discipline or the guidelines of the Georgia College & State University Study Abroad or Exchange Programs. *or approved undergraduate equivalent +students with an approved undergraduate equivalent should not enroll in this course

Consideration of topics in which courses are not otherwise offered, but for which there is a current need. This course is repeatable for credit.

A survey of the law of contracts and its impact on agency, partnerships, and the employment relationship. Additional topics include torts, insurance, landlord/tenant, taxation, and business ethics. The goal of the course is not to impart technical legal skills, but to enhance the judgment which students will bring to their responsibilities as entrepreneurs.

Investigation of a topic of special interest, with reports given to the instructor. Approval of the department chairperson is required prior to registration. This course is repeatable for credit.

The laws and major regulations impacting domestic and international commercial transactions are the focus of the course: contracts, secured transactions, business torts, debtor-creditor relations, bankruptcy, business organizations, insurance, Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and SEC Acts of 1933-1934. In addition, the necessary role of ethics in business decision making will be examined.
