ODED - Outdoor Education

Required of all first year students to be taken in their first semester on campus. This seminar provides an overview of academic requirements for graduation and helps establish meaningful career goals and objectives. The seminar includes discussion of policies, standards, procedures, expectations, and resources that will contribute to student success throughout the student's academic career. This course does not count toward the total hours required for graduation.

Overview of the practice of outdoor education. Introduces students to the various ways that outdoor educators can serve as an agent of behavioral change through the use of adventure, environmental, and experiential education strategies. Field trips are required. Additional special course fee is required; see semester course schedule for amount.

This course provides theoretical and experiential understanding of the use of group development activities for facilitating individual and group learning. Weekend residential experience required.

Prerequisite: ODED 2140. ODED 2140 may be taken concurrently. Provides historical, theoretical, and experiential understanding of program and management practice associated with the use of "challenge courses". Technical skill development, facilitation strategies, safety procedures, equipment management, and program design are addressed. Additional special course fee required; see semester course schedule for amount.

Prerequisite: Approval of the Department Chairperson. This course offers an opportunity to study a topic of interest at an introductory level that is not included in the program of study. Special topics courses used in programs for a group of students or a cohort will require a DOE syllabus; otherwise a student will complete the special topic contract in conjunction with the faculty supervisor. Signatures signify agreement to the terms of the contract. This course is repeatable for credit.

Prerequisite: ODED 2110. A comprehensive overview of flatwater and coastal kayak touring. Activity-specific technical skill development, equipment management, hazard recognition, rescue skills, and instructional/facilitation strategies are addressed. Field trips are required. Students may not receive credit for both ODED 3310 and ODED 3120 Outdoor Pursuits: Water. Students must pass a swim proficiency test to remain enrolled in the course. Additional special course fee required; see semester course schedule for amount.

Activity-specific technical skill development, equipment management, hazard recognition, rescue skills, and instructional/facilitation strategies are addressed. Field trips are required. Students may not receive credit for both ODED 3320 and ODED 3120. Students must pass a swim proficiency test to remain enrolled in the course. Activity-specific technical skill development, equipment management, hazard recognition, rescue skills, and instructional/facilitation strategies are addressed. Field trips are required. Students may not receive credit for both ODED 3330 and ODED 3110. Additional special course fee required; see semester course schedule for amount.

Prerequisite: ODED 2110. A comprehensive overview of emergency response in backcountry settings. Incident command systems: search and rescue clothing and equipment; travel and navigation skills; search philosophy, tactics, and operations; and survival skills are addressed. Course may include primitive living skills or technical skills such as high-angle rescue, cave rescue, and/or swift water rescue as determined by the instructor. Field trips are required. Prerequisite: ODED 2110. A comprehensive overview of selected outdoor pursuits. Activity-specific technical skill development, equipment management, hazard recognition, rescue skills, and instructional/facilitation strategies are addressed. Field trips are required.

A survey of outdoor education practice, principles, history, and theory. Environmental education adventure education, and experiential education concepts will be introduced as they relate to education, recreation, and social service settings. Field trips may be required. Students may not receive credit for ODED 2120 and ODED 3500.

Provides historical, theoretical, and experiential understanding of program and management practice associated with the use of "challenge courses" in education, recreation and therapeutic settings. Technical skill development, facilitation strategies, safety procedures, equipment management, and program design are addressed. Field trips may be required. Students may not receive credit for ODED 2130 and ODED 3210.

Prerequisites: ODED 2140 and Outdoor Education major. Provides theoretical and experiential understanding of the design of outdoor education programs. Sequencing, event selection, outcomes development, and assessment are addressed. Laboratory and field trips are required. Prerequisite: ODED 2110. This course provides theoretical and experiential understanding of the leadership of outdoor education activities for facilitating individual and group learning. Technical skill development, facilitation strategies, safety procedures, and program design are addressed as they relate to leading outdoor pursuits programs such as backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, or rock climbing. Field trips are required. Additional special course fee is required; see semester course schedule for amount.

This course provides theoretical and experiential understanding of the leadership of challenge course activities. Technical skill development, facilitation strategies, safety procedures, and program design are addressed as they relate to leading challenge course programs.

Prerequisite: ODED 2140. Provides theoretical and experiential understanding of the design and delivery of experiential education. Field trips required.

Prerequisites: ODED 2140 and ODED 3500. Provides an overview of administrative responsibilities and procedures related to outdoor education programs and services. Professional standards, human resource development, site planning, strategic management, program evaluation, and funding strategies are addressed. Field trips are required.

Prerequisite: Six hours of Outdoor Education coursework. An opportunity to gain experience with outdoor education that shows the convergence between outdoor education and the student’s major discipline.

The independent study in outdoor education is a research project in a selected area of professional interest. The student will complete the independent study contract in conjunction with the faculty supervisor. Signatures signify agreement to the terms of the contract. Approval of the school director is required. This course is repeatable for credit.

Prerequisite: Permission of the school director. An individually designed and planned field experience supervised by a faculty member. Internship selection and approval are based on the student's professional goals and facility suitability for offering an appropriate learning opportunity.

Prerequisites: ODED 2140 and ODED 3500. An opportunity to gain experience with a mentor facility related to the cognate area of specialization. This course is repeatable for credit.
