MGMT - Management

MGMT 5101 Business Statistics

A general course designed to provide students with the background necessary for understanding the role of statistics in decision making. Data collection, organization, and applications including sampling and probability distributions, measures of association, hypothesis testing and forecasting with a consideration of ethical implications.

MGMT 5141 Principles of Management

An introduction to the management process, emphasizing planning and strategy, organizational theory and structure, organizational behavior, direction, and control including leadership, motivation, team building, management information systems and current managerial issues including Total Quality Management, multi-cultural impact, and ethical considerations.

MGMT 5165 Small Business Institute

Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor and graduate director. A hands-on experience concerned with the problems and responsibilities of starting and operating a small business. Students work in teams, consulting with small businesses and/or entrepreneurs on actual business problems. Graduate students are often used as team leaders.

MGMT 5980 Study Abroad

Prerequisites: Acceptance into a Georgia College & State University exchange program and permission of the Director of International Services and Programs. An individually designed and planned learning experience in the student’s major program of study at an institution abroad. Specific credits to be determined in advance of registration and study. Grading to be based on evaluation reports of the exchange institution. The course may be used to fulfill major requirements limited only by the program specific requirements of a discipline or the guidelines of the Georgia College & State University Study Abroad or Exchange Programs.

MGMT 6101 Res Meth & Stat Appl in Busine

Prerequisite: 3 hrs college-level statistics. An examination of research methods and statistical techniques applied to business settings. Upon completion of the course, students should have a comprehensive understanding of the research process. Topics include research design, measurement issues, the sources and collection of data, the use of statistical procedures such as multiple regression and analysis of variance, and interpretation and presentation of results. Students will have the opportunity to apply these concepts and methods to business problems through case- and/or project-oriented methodologies.

MGMT 6105 Quant Methods for Bus Research

Prerequisite: 3 hrs college-level statistics. This course deals with the application of specific quantitative models to business problems. The emphasis is placed on decision making under uncertainty and risk, probability, programming, and simulation models. Computer-assisted problem solving is applied to the use of these models.

MGMT 6115 Operations Management

Prerequisites: 3 hrs college-level statistics. The course deals with the design and implementation of production systems for service and goods-producing organizations. Topics include strategic planning, facilities design, project management, and design of computer-based quality and performance control systems.

MGMT 6125 International Management

This course explores different economic, political/governmental, and social/cultural systems and their impact on managerial functions. It imparts a clearer understanding of the major facets of international operations.

MGMT 6135 Organizational Theory & Behavi

Focuses on a variety of topics concerning organizational behavior and organizational theory including human behavior at the level of the individual, the small group, and the organization. Individual and cultural differences, group dynamics, power distribution, structure, environment, and technology are discussed in relation to the effectiveness of organizations.

MGMT 6155 Bus Ethics and Global Responib

This is a cross-functional course examining the impact of the environment, ethical, demographic, cultural, regulatory and public policy influences on organizational decision-making.

MGMT 6165 Human Resources in Admin.

The management of human resources emphasizing methods of job analysis and design, manpower planning, selection, placement, appraisal, reward systems, training and development, and member relations within the legal and social framework of organizations.

MGMT 6175 Seminar in Quality Management

This course provides a comprehensive study of the managerial principles and practices applicable in business process reengineering and total quality management. Research findings and case studies will emphasize those companies and organizations who claim to have implemented reengineering efforts. The course will focus on quality and productivity gains achieved by managerial applications designed to improve productivity compared to the damage done when reengineering is not effectively implemented.

MGMT 6195 Strategic Management

Prerequisites: ACCT 6105, FINC 6141, MGMT 6101, MGMT 6115, MGMT 6135, MKTG 6161. Integrates the subject matter of several disciplines in solving comprehensive, multi-faceted management problems at the strategic, policy-making level of the organization including ethical and international implications. Requires knowledge of accounting, finance, marketing, economics, organizational theory, quantitative and behavioral decision-making, planning, and control methods. The importance of problem identification, strategy formulation, implementation, and evaluation is the focus of the course. This course is the capstone course for graduate business administration students. May be taken only by students with regular status in MBA program and with required prerequisites.

This course meets special needs of students and/or the community. Approval of the graduate director is required prior to registering.

MGMT 6671 Analytical & Inferential Tools

This course presents an introduction to statistical concepts and techniques useful to managers of organizations in both the public and private sectors. Topics covered include descriptive and graphical analysis, probability, basic inferential techniques, analysis of variance, and regression analysis.

MGMT 6673 The Human Env of Organizations

This course addresses topics which will help the student to understand human behavior and organizational processes that facilitate or hinder work performance. The topics in this course provide the foundation for understanding individual and group behavior and provide the student with appropriate theory which will enable them to solve various problems faced by managers.

MGMT 6675 Operations & Quality Mgmt.

Prerequisite: MGMT 6671. This course is an introduction to key goods-producing and service-rendering issues, and associated theories, tools, and techniques that will facilitate successful operations management decision making. Emphasis is given to significant problem areas that novice entrepreneurs encounter in the modern business environment.

MGMT 6679 Strategy & The Business Plan

This is the capstone course in the full-time MBA program. It provides a venue for integration of the subject matter covered in the various disciplinary courses comprising the program. The culminating experiences involve operation of a company in a simulated competitive environment and completion of a realistic business plan for a new small organization venture. The focus is on solving comprehensive, multi-faceted management problems at the strategic, policy-making level of the organization including ethical and international implications. The course focuses on the importance of problem identification, strategy formulation, implementation, and evaluation.

Comprehensive study and research on a topic of special interest. Approval of the graduate director and department chairperson is required prior to registration. *or approved undergraduate equivalent *students with an approved undergraduate equivalent should not enroll in this course

MGMT 6910 Applied Decision Making

Prerequisite: College-Level Statistics. Parametric (normal theory) and nonparametric statistical theories, tools, and techniques that facilitate managerial decision-making in today’s business environment are the focus of the course. Topics include concepts of centrality, dispersion, sampling, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance, regression, and selected non-parametric equivalents.

MGMT 6950 Organization Behavior & Comm

The importance of developing the mindset and the skills to understand the interpersonal aspect of organizations guides the course. The subject covers basic concepts such as individual motivation, decision-making, interpersonal communication and influence, power and politics, small group behavior, and leadership.

MGMT 6970 Strategic Operations Mgmt

Prerequisites: College -Level Statistics and MGMT 6910. An applied study of key strategic operations theories and methods that facilitate successful management of processes related to the development and delivery of both services and manufactured goods is the focus of the course. Topics include operations strategies, quality management, forecasting, process management, stochastic inventory control and supply chain management, lean thinking, and project management.

MGMT 6990 Leadership & Strat Decisions

Prerequisites: ACCT 6900, MGMT 6910, MKTG 6930, FINC 6940, MGMT 6950, and MGMT 6970. The course focuses on the knowledge and skills necessary to create, implement, and evaluate the innovative strategies needed for success in today’s fast-paced and competitive business environment. Through appropriate case studies, how real-world companies employ strategy in making critical decisions is explored. Areas of study include formulating relevant corporate action plan and addressing leadership issues inherent in working to create a sustainable competitive advantage.
