Prerequisite: ODED 2110. A comprehensive overview of flatwater and coastal kayak touring. Activity-specific technical skill development, equipment management, hazard recognition, rescue skills, and instructional/facilitation strategies are addressed. Field trips are required. Students may not receive credit for both ODED 3310 and ODED 3120 Outdoor Pursuits: Water. Students must pass a swim proficiency test to remain enrolled in the course. Additional special course fee required; see semester course schedule for amount.

Prerequisite: ODED 2110. A comprehensive overview of emergency response in backcountry settings. Incident command systems: search and rescue clothing and equipment; travel and navigation skills; search philosophy, tactics, and operations; and survival skills are addressed. Course may include primitive living skills or technical skills such as high-angle rescue, cave rescue, and/or swift water rescue as determined by the instructor. Field trips are required. A survey of outdoor education practice, principles, history, and theory. Environmental education adventure education, and experiential education concepts will be introduced as they relate to education, recreation, and social service settings. Field trips may be required. Students may not receive credit for ODED 2120 and ODED 3500.

Provides historical, theoretical, and experiential understanding of program and management practice associated with the use of "challenge courses" in education, recreation and therapeutic settings. Technical skill development, facilitation strategies, safety procedures, equipment management, and program design are addressed. Field trips may be required. Students may not receive credit for ODED 2130 and ODED 3210.

Prerequisites: ODED 2140 and Outdoor Education major. Provides theoretical and experiential understanding of the design of outdoor education programs. Sequencing, event selection, outcomes development, and assessment are addressed. Laboratory and field trips are required. Prerequisites: Outdoor Education major, ODED 2110, ODED 2140, and ODED 3500, This course will focus on the integration of the outdoor, educational, & human skills essential to all professional outdoor educators. Students will utilize a backcountry context to engage in a critical self-assessment process and practice implementing Site Management principles into field course management.
