Core IMPACTS (General Education Curriculum)

The Core IMPACTS curriculum will go into effect for students who first matriculate at Georgia College & State University in Summer 2024 and Fall 2024. Students who first enrolled prior to Summer 2024 will use the requirements listed in the Core Curriculum section of this catalog.

Students who first enrolled at GCSU prior to Summer 2024 who are interested in using this curriculum should discuss this option with their academic advisor. Students must fulfill all degree requirements from the same catalog.

Core IMPACTS

Georgia College & State University, in cooperation with the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) and other USG institutions, has adopted the Core IMPACTS common core curriculum.  This curriculum is designed to ensure that students acquire essential knowledge in foundational academic areas and develop career-ready competencies to support their broad academic and career goals.

There are seven Core IMPACTS areas, each with an accompanying shorthand name that is listed in parenthesis. The seven areas are: Institutional Priority (Institution); Mathematics and Quantitative Skills (Mathematics); Political Science and US History (Citizenship); Arts, Humanities, and Ethics (Humanities); Communicating in Writing (Writing); Technology, Mathematics, and Sciences (STEM); and Social Sciences (Social Sciences). Students at all USG institutions must satisfactorily complete all seven Core IMPACTS areas to qualify for a bachelor's degree.

The Core IMPACTS framework also provides continuity across institutions and honors the state's commitment to transferability.  Core credit earned at one USG institution will transfer to the same core area at another system institution without penalty to the student.  

Each Core IMPACTS course directs students to a broad orienting question, helps students develop specific career-ready competencies, and satisfies specific USG and GCSU learning outcomes.  These are listed under the heading for each area and have also been incorporated into the course descriptions for each course.
