SPAN 1001 Intro Span Lang & Culture I

Prerequisite: Cannot be taken for credit by students who had two years or more of Spanish in high school. Introduction to listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish and to the culture of Spanish-speaking regions. One hour of language laboratory per week is required. SPAN 1002 Intro Span Lang & Culture II

Prerequisite: SPAN 1001, or equivalent. Continued listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish with further study of the culture of Spanish-speaking regions. SPAN 2001 Interm Span Lang & Culture I

Prerequisite: SPAN 1002, or equivalent. The student will continue to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and learn to communicate in culturally appropriate ways. One hour of language laboratory per week is required. This course is non-repeatable for credit. Additional special course fee required; see semester course schedule for amount.

SPAN 2002 Interm Span Lang & Culture II

Prerequisite: SPAN 2001, or equivalent. Students continue to increase linguistic and cultural proficiency through the use of a variety of materials and activities. Course will serve as a transition between intermediate and upper-level courses in Spanish. This course is non-repeatable for credit. Additional special course fee required; see semester course schedule for amount.

SPAN 3010 Span Structure & Composition

Prerequisite: SPAN 2002. General review of grammar through composition and other written activities, such as summaries, correspondence, descriptions, narration, literary analysis, and other rhetorical and culturally appropriate forms. Students are highly encouraged to take SPAN 3010 and SPAN 3020 concurrently.

SPAN 3020 Spanish Conversation & Diction

Prerequisite: SPAN 2002. Emphasis on the improvement of pronunciation and conversation skills while developing vocabulary and communicative structures. Conversation topics will include a wide range of situations, themes, and readings. Students are highly encouraged to take SPAN 3010 and SPAN 3020 concurrently.

SPAN 3210 Survey of Span Literature I

Prerequisites: SPAN 3010, SPAN 3020. Study of the development of Spanish literature from the beginning to the Golden Age. Study of principal trends. Reading of representative authors.

SPAN 3220 Survey of Span Literature II

Prerequisites: SPAN 3010, SPAN 3020. Study of the development of Spanish literature from the Golden Age to the present time. Study of principal trends. Reading of representative authors.

SPAN 3230 Survey of Latin American Lit I

Prerequisites: SPAN 3010, SPAN 3020. Overview of Spanish-American literature and its cultural context from the European conquest of the Americas to the 19th century. Study of the principal literary movements and authors during the Colonial times.

SPAN 3240 Survey of Latin Amer Lit II

Prerequisites: SPAN 3010, SPAN 3020. Overview of Latin American literature from the independence of Latin American countries to the present. Introduces principal literary movements and authors, among others, Borges, Garc�a M�rquez, Vallejo, Neruda, Carpentier, Rulfo, and Fuentes.

SPAN 3310 Intro to Hispanic Linguistics

Prerequisite: SPAN 3010 & SPAN 3020. Introductory-level Linguistics course offering an overview of the principal areas of Hispanic Linguistics, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, synchronic and diachronic variation and linguistic change, and second language acquisition. The course is taught in Spanish. This course is non-repeatable for credit. Additional special course fee required; see semester course schedule for amount.

SPAN 3950 Service Learning

Prerequisites: SPAN 3010, SPAN 3020. This course will provide students with the opportunity to work on service projects, utilizing skills related to their major in non-profit and service organizations. This course is repeatable for credit.

SPAN 4110 Adv Structure & Composition

Prerequisites: SPAN 3010 and SPAN 3020. Detailed, analytical study of grammatical and oral structures with ample opportunity for practical application in composition and conversation.

SPAN 4450 Spanish Civilization

Prerequisites: SPAN 3010, SPAN 3020. Significant examples of Spanish achievements set against the social, political and especially the literary background.

SPAN 4500 Seminar in Contemp Lat/Am Cult

Prerequisites: SPAN 3010, SPAN 3020. Study of the culture of the Latin-American peoples in the light of various ethnic, economic and social factors that influence the cultural development of each people and Inter-American relations. This course is repeatable for credit.

SPAN 4950 Special Topics

Prerequisites: SPAN 3010, SPAN 3020, and one of the following: SPAN 3210, SPAN 3220, SPAN 3230, SPAN 3240, or SPAN 4500. Consideration of topics in which courses are not otherwise offered but for which there is a current need. Subject matter varies. This course is repeatable for credit.

Prerequisites: SPAN 3010, SPAN 3020, and Chairperson's approval. Individually designed learning experience involving off-campus field experience and study in the private or public sector. This course is repeatable for credit.
